News & views: New e-Business Conference for SMEs

Bolton Institute’s e-business and information technology experts are organising a two-day conference this summer for small and medium enterprises (SMEs), which will be launched with a keynote address by Under Secretary of State for SMEs, Nigel Griffiths MP.

Called e4sme, the conference is the first of what is to become an annual event and will focus on how using the right strategies and technologies can underpin business performance. The conference, to be at Wigan Investment Centre on 18-19 June, is a joint venture by the Institute’s Business Logistics and Information Systems department (BLIS) and the Collaborative Partnerships for SMEs (COPSE). e4sme aims to attract SME managers and directors, e-commerce practitioners, supply chain and logistics management as well as researchers. The conference aims to establish the mechanisms used by SMEs to put e-commerce and IT solutions into practice in the development of networks, logistics and supply chains. The presentations will be on themes, including e-supply chains, networks, communication and infrastructure, knowledge management as well as innovations and challenges facing SMEs. Speakers include Dr John Langley, Professor of Supply Chain Management at Georgia Institute of Technology, USA and Professor Dave Snowden, Director of the Cynefin Centre, IBM Global Services, UK, plus other relevant keynote session presentations - speakers who are either experienced industrial practitioners or applied academic research specialists. The conference organiser is , BLIS, Professor Stan Oliver,who said: ‘Our aim is to bring the latest academic knowledge and research innovation right into the market place. We aim to share what has been discovered, what we expect to happen in the near future and how SMEs can arm themselves with information, which could put them one step ahead of their competitors. ‘This is our first such conference here in the North West and it is already exciting a great deal of interest.’ The Institute of Operations Management is pleased to be supporting this event.
