News & views: Centre for Strategic Manufacturing conference celebrates 7th year

The Centre for Strategic Manufacturing at the University of Strathclyde this year celebrates its seventh year of existence and, to mark the occasion, organised a conference with the West of Scotland TCS Centre entitled “Improving Business Performance – How to Manage and Sustain Business Improvement Programmes”. This conference, supported by the IOM and Quality Scotland, took place at The Lighthouse in Glasgow and was attended by around 85 delegates who enjoyed presentations from no less than 12 speakers, including Joe Beeston, Chief Executive of Highland Spring, and Bill Dickie, Operations Director at Houston Warehousing.

The morning session, chaired by CSM’s Deputy Director Dr. Jill MacBryde, introduced the theory of sustainable business performance improvement, while practical applications were presented during the afternoon session, which was chaired by Dr. David Brown, Manager of the West of Scotland TCS Centre. Academic and industrial researchers had the chance to showcase their work in 5 areas: value, strategy, performance measurement, business processes and team-working. Each presentation was followed by a valuable questionand- answer session, and there were ample networking opportunities throughout the day.
