Vol 29 - No 08 - December 2003/January 2004

APS Update

Supply chain planning in any manufacturing and distribution business is a trade-off between several key factors. Developing a plan which balances the different factors to come up with an optimal solution has always been extremely difficult. Figure 1 gives an indication of the complexity.

Essentially the need is to balance inventory levels (minimise) with customer service (maximise) and asset utilisation (maximise) to get highest overall profit to the business. A number of facilitators come into play, key ones being lead time reduction, forecast quality and inventory management capability.
