Maintaining the Momentum

Of the myriad of organisations that embark upon a Lean implementation programme, the vast majority fail to achieve anywhere near the full potential.

A survey undertaken by the DTI’s Manufacturing Advisory Service (MAS) for the South-East discovered that 86% of manufacturing companies who had implemented Lean techniques over the last two years had failed to maintain the improvements they were able to achieve in the first few weeks; and thus had failed to realise the real benefits of Lean.

One of the major reasons stated by manufacturers as to why they felt they had not been able to achieve or maintain all the improvements they could, was the culture of the organisation which formed a ‘soft barrier’ to any form of improvement programme.
