The Public Sector Scorecard: A Different Approach

The Suffolk Coastal district is located on the East Coast to the north and east of Ipswich, the county town of Suffolk. The area is mainly rural with thirty-seven percent of the district designated as an area of outstanding natural beauty which therefore attracts high levels of tourism particularly to its seaside resorts of Felixstowe and Aldeburgh. The area is also part of the Cambridge to Ipswich hi-tech corridor and plays host to B.T.’s Research Centre and also contains the UK’s largest container port at Felixstowe.

Suffolk Coastal District Council, like many district councils across the UK, is responsible for delivering public services to the residents and communities of this diverse district. These services range broadly from waste management, coastal protection and planning services, through to meeting housing needs, tackling anti-social behaviour and attracting businesses and services into the district. As with many other district councils, Suffolk Coastal found itself in a position where the needs and expectations of it residents were and are increasing, whilst the available funds to deliver these services are reducing.
