Institute news : Chairman’s Message

A job advert in the Sunday Times caught my eye recently, not because I fancied it, but because it shows firmly how the world of Operations Management is increasingly relevant to other business sectors than traditional manufacturing.

It read:

‘Director of Operations – Our operations function forms part of one of the largest and most sophisticated media monitoring companies in the world. We read, watch and listen to thousands of media sources searching for nearly half a million client specific keywords and references. Every day we find and deliver tens of thousands of cuttings to our customers. Our Director of Operations plays a critical role in assuring the ongoing success of this business. We would look for the successful candidate to display a combination of strategic thinking, together with a hands-on approach to the people and the daily activity and challenges within the production and operations departments, totalling almost 300 staff.’

Well, that is a long way from what most of us think of as typical operations management, but it is exactly how our Institute needs to start challenging everyone to think ‘outside the box’. The world of business is ever changing and we want and need to be much more influential. We want new members from these business sectors - who do you know?

As these business sectors begin to experience the pressures on cost and efficiency that IOM members are all too familiar with, there is a lot of knowledge that we can share. We want to teach the tools and techniques so familiar to IOM members to these businesses - do you know any that need help?

The IOM has a lot to teach and of course is always learning new skills – so we are waking up to the new directions the IOM needs to take. You all have a part to play and the IOM is putting together an exciting new game plan to announce this coming Autumn - are you ready to play your part?

Geoff Relph, FIOM Chairman.
