News and views : ‘Operations Planning’ or MRP in a hospitalI recently came across the use of MRP in a hospital. They established a bill of material (BOM) for each ‘standard’ operation (one could imagine they might also have customised the relevant BOM for a more specific ‘non-standard’ operation). As operations were scheduled by the ‘consultants’, they were added to the operations list, or master production schedule (MPS), with date and time attached. MRP could then check whether the necessary components would be available in stock by the date of the operation and, if not, could trigger action messages and/or an increase in the supply of the components to ensure they would be available just in time.
One could perhaps take this a stage further – check that the MPS is achievable by the key resources, such as operating table, ‘crew’ for the operating theatre, post operation recovery facilities, post operation bed, and more. And the next step might be to consider ‘sales & operations planning’ … maybe.
So what is so wrong with implementing the relevant parts of ERP in our National Health Service?
