News and views : Letter to the Editor

Dear Malcolm Firstly, I would like to congratulate the Institute. Over the last two years there have been a number of excellent company visits. Only a small number of members take advantage of these opportunities to learn from other companies, but of those who do participate, many attend all of the visits and gain much from them.

Without exception, our hosts have been exceptionally welcoming and willing to show us what they are achieving in these days of fierce competition. However, in my view we are not taking full advantage of the opportunities uniquely available to us and there is sometimes very little time for asking questions and discussion with the hosts.

IOM members bring a wealth of knowledge and experience, and during the visits members can observe many possibilities for improvement and potential value to our hosts. How do I know? They discuss these opportunities with me!

Discussion of how specific host processes can be improved will enable members to take back to their companies a practical insight into proven methodology and offer value to our hosts who have invested a significant amount of time organising the event.

I welcome comment from IOM members.

Yours sincerely

Brian J. O'Connor, MIOM
