Whose turn with the barrel? A tale of non-integrated management

When I was out in the Far East looking at an ISO9001 management system at a polyurethane foaming factory I came upon three very jovial workers mixing some TDI (toluene di-isocyanate), which is toxic to a few parts in a million, in open barrels with broom handles, and with very little protection, no mask, no goggles, no rubber aprons and with open sandals.

A clear case of a dangerous process being performed dangerously, possibly due to the non-integration of materials control and overall management systems.

Which reminded me that five years ago I was a lone voice within the accredited certification bodies offering ISO9001 and ISO14001 certification arguing for integrated management systems, and even now there are conspicuous disparities and incompatibilities between ISO9001:2000 and ISO14001. BS8800 was the first guideline standard to explicitly fit in with one of the others...
