Optimisation And The Factory

The traditional approach to planning production is to produce parts by choosing a machine to process parts based on unit cost of operation, however this approach can restrict the capabilities of manufacturing cells adopted by many factories

Selecting machines to convert a design specification into a product, and specifying the machines in which the operations are to be performed, along with the machining parameters, determines a sequence of operational constraints to be scheduled. However, specifying alternative machines to perform the same operation will ensure manufacturing commitments can be honoured, should the primary resource be overloaded.
