Safety Stocks, Safety Margins: Back To Basics

Our theme for this issue of Control is ‘Back to Basics' and this message applies strongly to the traditional methods we use to evaluate and provide cover for uncertainties – particularly of sales demand, but also of raw material supplies and production.

The main method has been to evaluate a level of safety stock and to plan to provide this additional supply in case it is needed. This short article looks at some of the deficiencies and encourages the reader to go back to basics and assess his own operations and decide what is sensible, effective and understandable for them.
