LetterDear Editor: In your February edition, Julian Mosquera and Chris Foster discussed in a polite and informative manner the aims and impact on the Waste in Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive (‘Take-Back') in rather the manner that one might have discussed a government programme for compulsory mass euthanasia.
Julian and Chris! – where was the scream of outrage that our country should be being subject to yet another downpour of harmful and unnecessary regulation by the world's largest and most deadly bureaucracy, intrusive everywhere and accountable to one-one? (And as your article makes clear, the regulations coming our way in 2003 are only the start of things).
A further point about ‘Take-Back' that might have been made is the interference of big government in such minutiae of society as waste disposal. Control readers involved in the Packaging Waste Regulations will need no reminder of that previous disaster. Yet another point might have been the extraordinary claim that it is the manufacturer, rather than the purchaser who should bear responsibility for the final disposal of the product by the purchaser.
This is an un-discussed moral assertion that surely might also lead to the manufacturer being held accountable for how the purchaser uses the product during its life.
Yours sincerely
