The Year 2000 issue and beyond: the need for agile software systems

The Year 2000 has been a costly problem to solve (assuming you have already solved it!) and now with EMU looming another round of enhancements to software systems is underway and this time it will be more costly. Have you, like many others, been forced by these issues to abandon 'in house' software development and replace your ageing systems with a packaged solution? If you have not made the switch, what are the costs and challenges you are going to face to address the EMU and other, future, mandatory changes? If you have switched, how are you tailoring the system to meet your specific business needs? Could you be planting future time bombs? This article offers an exploration of the background to these issues and hopefully provides at least some of the information that you will need to answer the above questions.
