Millennium

By the time this editorial makes it to press, the last major event of this millennium for the Institute, 'Making the Difference' Conference, will have been delivered... As the last chairman of the IOM in this millennium and the first of the new one, I would like the opportunity to share a few of my thoughts with you all. The age of the dinosaurs lasted one hundred and eight million years but finished sixty five million years ago. The reason the dinosaurs lasted such a long time was probably due to the stability of their environment rather than adaptability to change. So when the natural catastrophe that befell them happened they could not cope and they were wiped out in one fell swoop. This can happen to any business that cannot see the need for change when it is required.

My message for you is one of both optimism and caution. The rate of change over the past thirty years has increased alarmingly. The growth in e-commerce and its contribution to opening global markets for all businesses no matter how big or small, is there for those prepared to grasp the opportunity.

We are, however, only at the starting gate. I believe that the pace of change will increase more rapidly as we enter the new millennium and there are likely to be casualties for those businesses who do not recognise the use of the new technologies.

Businesses are under pressure to reduce costs and lead times at the same time as increasing customer focus and flexibility, two traditionally opposed statements.

To succeed in this new challenging environment I believe we need to make better use of the new technologies. And investing in education and training are paramount.

The Institute will continue to strive to support its members in its own professional education programmes and in 2000 will launch its own multi-media Remote Operations Management Education project (ROME). We will also continue to look for colaboration with other Institutes in research to keep our members at the cutting edge of our core activities.

As we leave this millennium lets try and make sure the dinosaurs rest in peace in the new one.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish you and all your families a Very Happy Christmas and a successful bug free New Year and look forward to the dawning of the New Millennium
