Advanced Planning and Scheduling (APS)

Branch news On the 7th October the London and Southern Branches of the Institute held an evening talk on Advanced Planning and Scheduling (APS) presented by Günther Kruse.... The talk was very well attended and attendees were entertained with a skillful talk on the history, current state and future of operations management.

Günther described the history from quill pen, through MRP in all its forms, to the watershed breakthrough of planning with constraints represented by OPT. He then described the development of planning with dynamic constraints in APS, the way it interfaced with ERP systems and most importantly the facilities and opportunities afforded by this technique to the planners and managers of industry. He tabulated the typical benefits that the implementation of APS create and summed up his presentation with a look into the future and where operations management was heading.

For a more detailed insight into this topic you should read the paper written by Gunther in the October issue of Control entitled, Advanced Planning & Scheduling - Today's "Hot Topic" in Manufacturing. This will give you the facts but, what you have missed if you did not attend the meeting was this coming to life and the added insight this gave.

Finally, I would like to thank Günther Kruse for this talk and Crawley College for hosting it.
