Chasing Muda - a case study in constraint based scheduling and lean enterprise application

John Darlington shows how Lean Operations have been applied at AlliedSignal, a major supplier of re-manufactured and non-current production products to the automotive industry. Scheduling and planning systems were enhanced to enable better synchronisation, reduction in floor space requirements, increased inventory turns, simplification of production procedures and communications, the introduction and empowerment of natural work teams and the focus on 'true' demand. The experience was entirely successful in terms of profit but less so in relation to customer service.
